Second Crossroads

Seventh Heaven 04/22/1988 The explorers were in caver heaven when they first got into this 100-foot long walking passage. In this passage, Wind Cave officially became the seventh longest cave in the world, passing up 51.27 mile long Systeme de la Coumo d'Hyouernedo of France. Shattered Hall 03/16/1895 This room, located near the top of Plummer's Pit has ceilings and walls of shattered sandstone. The original name of the room has been lost in history but was renamed Shattered Hall by Jim Pisarowicz. Surveyed by Jim on 12/20/1987. J.D. McDonald and John Stabler
Shattered Sky 03/16/1895 This room is above Shattered Hall in Plummer's Pit. It has the same characteristics as Shattered Hall but with more paleofill. Another room whose original name has been lost, it was renamed SHATTERED SKY by Jim Pisarowicz on 21 December 1987. It is thought that this area extends up into the Minnelusa Formation and to a limestone bed. J.D. McDonald and John Stabler

Sheeps Head 1898 An area with a chert ceiling that has a rock that resembles the head of a sheep. Also known as the Degree of Honor Hall.

Silent Lake 07/04/1891 The name for this lake derives from the joke that cavers play on new cavers to Wind Cave. Because the water in this lake is so clear it is often difficult to see. Veteran cavers will allow the new people to lead through this area and almost without fail, the new cavers will walk into this lake without warning. Snake Pit Entrance
A dug entrance (now gated) into Wind Cave. First connected to the main part of the cave in 1984. So called because a rattlesnake was seen in this entrance passage. Also known as the Blowhole. Warren Netherton, Dave Springhetti and John Scheltens

Snow Ball Room 1901 An area where moonmilk globs resemble snow balls adhering to the walls and ceilings.

Snow Room 1982 A room that is highly decorated with frostwork on small mounds of popcorn that resemble Christmas trees.
Snowdrift Avenue
Surveyed by Alan Howard and others. Named for the large quantities of aragonite frostwork found along the walls of this room.
Snowdrift Lane 07/17/1973 Drifts of aragonite snow up to 3-feet thick can be seen in this area. Alvin McLane and John Scheltens
Snowman's Heaven
Moonmilk has the consistency of cottage cheese in this area. The Windy City Grotto cavers made 8" high "snowmen" out of this moonmilk with matchsticks for arms. There were "cleaned" up by a NOLS group.Surveyed by Alan Howard and others.

Snurd Room 07/30/1972 This room derives it name from John Scheltens' term for logomites ("snurds"), which are found in this area. "Snurd" comes form Edgar Bergen's puppet Mortimer Snurd. Mark Stock, Carole Loskot, & John McArdle
Snurds in Exile 12/26/1982 A group of logomites are found in this, the north end of the House of the Fallen Snurd, area, away from the fallen logomite. Ken Allgier, John Scheltens and Dave Springhetti

Sounding Rock 1901 A large rock flake that rings when struck. Also known as His Satanic Majesty's Call.

Southern Comfort 09/28/1991 This huge passage went 650 feet further south than any known passage at the time. Jim Nepstad, Mike Wiles, Stan Allison and Paul Purger.
Spaghetti Bowl 03/15/1980 Named for Dave Springhetti, who found the way into this part of the cave. Dave Springhetti, Ken Allgier, John Scheltens and Mike Wiles.
Spanish Trail 07/17/1973 So named because the survey running through this area is the ST ("Spanish Trail") survey. Don Coons and Bob Reinstatler
Spar Heights 09/02/2000 A passage with 1 1/4" clear spar and 50-foot deep pits that connect to the Multipurpose Room. Rod Horrocks, Derek Wolfe, & Jim Lawton
Spar Tooth Chamber 01/24/1970 So named because of the abundance of vugs with dog tooth spar. Also referred to as Atlas Underground Hempworks. Ed Crawford, Jens Munthe and John Pollack
Sparkler, The 04/22/1986 An area with walls, floors, and ceilings coated with a sparkling coat of gypsum luster. Jim and Greg Nepstad and Jim Pisarowicz
Specimen Route 10/1/1979 Alvin McDonald and others used to collect specimens along this route. These formations were then sold on the surface for souvenirs. This practice was stopped when Wind Cave became a national park. Also known as the Spiral Stair Traverse. Surveyed by a team including ? Throssell
Spillway
This belly crawl was the key find that opened up the western part of Wind Cave. Discovered by Herb and Jan Conn and Dave Schnute, until 1986 this passage was the only route from the eastern to western sides of the cave. Herb and Jan Conn

Spiral Stair Traverse 1962 Also known as the Specimen Route.
Split Vote 11/11/2000 After surveying into a nearby virgin walking passage, they named several new areas, including the Campaign Trail, Battle of the Bulge, and Split Vote. They also named a 20 x 40-foot room the Ballot Box and a large balcony, the Gore Hole. All the names were in reference to the on-going Florida presidential election contest. Split Level Fissure 11/03/1986 An area with false floors broken out 4 feet above the "real" floor. The surveyors had to walk below the false floors. Bob Kobza and Jim Pisarowicz
Spook All 11/28/00 After finding a newspaper with a Halloween date(10/31/1897) in the passage the surveyers named the passage, Spook Alley. Rod Horrocks, Jay Kennedy, & Chris Ingebretsen

Standing Rock Chamber 1898 A large fallen block of rock on the Candlelight Tour. Where the mind reader, Mr. Johnstone found the pin head.

Sure Deal, The

Swiss Cheese Connection 12/03/1983 The northern section of Wind Cave is an incredible maze of crumbly, weathered rock. It is often described as a maze of "Swiss Cheese". This spot is a connection between two of these mazey areas. John Scheltens and Dave Springhetti
Swiss Scenery 1901 A rough-floored room on the historic tour that has yellow to brown boxwork. Located just past Samsons Palace.
